Elastic Waist Skirt

I came across this pin the other day from A Small Snippet's blog and decided to try the short version (without the pockets) :)

 Materials needed:
1-2 yds. of fabric
1.5 inch elastic
coordinating thread
sewing machine
 scissors

This pink chevron cotton fabric caught my eye so i decided to go with it.

To determine how much fabric you need: measure your waist and subtract 3 inches. to get the length, measure how ever long you want your skirt plus 5 inches to give room for a casing for the waistband and a hem.
My final measurements were 26x30

After you cut your fabric, lay the right sides together. Pin and sew down one of the longer sides.

Now you should have one long skirt panel. :)

Time to do a casing for the waistband....

lay your skirt panel with the right side down. Fold the top of fabric down 1/4 of an inch and iron. This encloses the raw edge for your casing.

Fold over again 1 3/4 inches. (the elastic is 1 1/4 inches. you add 1/2 an inch to get the total) and iron.

Sew the bottom of the casing closed.

With the right sides together, sew the other long side. Make sure you stop at the casing so there is enough space to put in the elastic.

(I forgot to take pictures of these steps)

Attach a large safety pin onto the end of your elastic and put it through the opening of the casing.

Feed through the casing, bunching fabric around the elastic to make sure it goes all the way around.

Once its pulled all the way through, stitch the edges of the elastic together. Don't forget to backstitch to make sure it stays together!

Fold the raw edges of the opening inside the casing and sew it closed.

Hem up the bottom to the length that you want. and you're all done! :)
